5 Fun Dog Exercises

Let’s face it. We just don’t exercise enough. When we don’t exercise, our pets don’t exercise either. But exercise is good for cardiovascular health, muscle development, and it promotes a longer life for your pet. Here are some tips to get you and your furry friends off the couch and on to a healthier lifestyle.

  1. Walk On

The obvious answer is to go on a walk! Most dogs love walks because it gives them an opportunity to see and smell new things, places, and people. Walks don’t have to be vigorous or long. In fact, some dogs prefer taking a leisurely stroll so they can stop and smell all the different scents around them. Don’t forget to bring baggies to pick up after your pup, and if you’re planning on a long walk, bring a water bottle to keep your dog hydrated.

  2. Socialize

If your dog is friendly, then the dog park is a great place to take your dog (as long as you’re current on shots) to exercise, socialize, and burn off some energy. Bring a ball or your pet’s favorite toy so you can play fetch or tug of war. You’ll burn some calories along with your dog if you play hard enough. Make sure to follow the leash laws and rules of the dog park to ensure everyone has a good time.

  3. Hit The Trails

Hiking with a dog can be super fun as long as you prepare in advance. Make sure you check the weather before you go, and make sure to bring treats and water for your pup if you’re in for a long trek. Remember to make sure your dog is up to date on flea and tick medicine before you head out into nature. Wear good hiking shoes, and have some fun!

  4. Take A Class

If your dog likes to learn, then sign him up for an agility course. Exercise can stimulate his body and his brain, and you’ll become even closer with your pet. Check out the classes in your locale, and help your dog exercise while learning new skills and sharpening his problem solving.

  5. Go Swimming

If your dog is a water lover, then hit the lake. Bring a ball or a frisbee, and watch your dog splash and play. If your dog is not a very good swimmer, you can buy a canine lifejacket. Jump in and swim with your dog to help him acclimate to the water if he isn’t used to it. Be sure to follow the rules and make sure you’re at a dog-friendly location before you pack your pup’s beach towel.
